Ask for recommendation letters with context and care
Help a recommender understand your goals, remember your work, and manage the request clearly.
Check what each application needs
Before asking anyone, review the current recommendation requirements for each college and application route. Record the requested recommender roles, submission process, and deadlines. Do not assume that every school asks for the same letters or welcomes extra ones.
Also check your school's process with a counselor or relevant staff member. There may be an internal request form or an earlier school deadline. Keeping those details in one place helps you make an accurate request and avoids giving a recommender conflicting instructions.
Choose someone who knows your work
Think about who has observed how you learn, respond to feedback, or contribute over time. A person who can recall specific examples may have useful context even if you were not the highest-scoring student in their class. Match your choice to the recommender role the college requests.
Ask whether they would feel comfortable writing a supportive recommendation, and give them space to decline. A brief conversation or a clear message can explain what you are applying for and when the letter would be needed. Do not submit their details to an application system before discussing the request.
Prepare a short, useful context sheet
Share the information that helps them remember your work: a project you discussed, an assignment you revised, a challenge you worked through, or a contribution they saw. Add your current academic interests and a concise description of why you are pursuing them.
Include confirmed deadlines and submission instructions separately from those examples. Offer context rather than a script for the letter, and avoid sending a long collection of unrelated accomplishments. The recommender's own observations are the reason you asked them.
Follow up respectfully
Agree on how to handle reminders and check the application's submission status when it becomes available. If a deadline approaches and the letter is still missing, send a brief reminder with the relevant date and instructions. Ask whether any information is missing rather than assuming the delay means they forgot.
Thank them for the time and attention the request involves. Follow the platform's confidentiality choices and your school's guidance. Once your application process is complete, a short update can close the loop without asking the recommender to predict your admissions outcome.
