Essay writing

Use essay feedback without losing your voice

Ask focused questions, sort conflicting suggestions, and make revisions you can explain.

Tell your reader what you need

Share the prompt, word limit, and the stage of your draft with someone you trust. A reader cannot judge whether an essay answers the question without seeing that question. Explain whether you need help with the main idea, the sequence of events, or sentences that feel unclear.

Ask a small number of focused questions. What did you learn about me? Where did you need more context? Which point felt repeated? These questions give a reader a clearer task than asking whether the essay is good.

Separate the observation from the proposed fix

A reader might suggest deleting a paragraph because they lost track of the story. Their confusion is useful evidence, but deletion is only one possible response. You might need a transition, a clearer time reference, or a shorter explanation instead.

Write down the underlying issue before editing. For example, turn “rewrite the beginning” into “the reader does not understand why I joined the project.” That gives you a specific problem to solve while leaving the wording and approach in your hands.

Resolve conflicting advice against your purpose

Two readers may want different things from the same draft. Return to the prompt and the main idea you want to communicate. Ask which suggestion helps a reader follow your experience and which mainly reflects a preference for a different writing style.

You can test a change in a separate version. Read both versions aloud and compare what each makes clearer or removes. If a new sentence sounds impressive but expresses something you do not mean, revise it or return to the original.

Finish with a deliberate revision pass

Work on the largest issue first. Clarifying the central story may make several sentence-level suggestions irrelevant. After revising, check the whole essay for repeated explanations, missing transitions, and details that no longer fit.

Keep a final read for accuracy and voice. Confirm that events, roles, and quotations are represented honestly. Whether feedback comes from a person or a tool, you should understand every change and feel comfortable calling the final essay your own.
