Make work and family responsibilities visible

Explain everyday commitments with clear context, concrete tasks, and realistic time estimates.

Start with a normal week

Write down the responsibilities that shape your time outside class. These might include a paid job, caring for a sibling, helping with household logistics, or supporting a family business. Begin with what you do instead of trying to make each commitment sound like a club or formal position.

List recurring tasks alongside occasional ones. Preparing dinner several evenings a week is different from helping at one event. That distinction helps you describe the commitment accurately and remember work you might otherwise overlook.

Describe the responsibility you actually hold

Use specific verbs to explain your role. Scheduling, preparing, translating, organizing, and training each tell a reader more than “helped out” when they accurately describe the work. Include enough context to show what you handle independently and where you assist someone else.

For a fictional example, “Worked at family store” could become “Restocked shelves, checked deliveries against orders, and helped customers during weekend shifts.” This explains the contribution without inventing a title or claiming responsibility for the whole business.

Estimate time with care

Use a calendar, work schedule, or typical week to reconstruct your commitment. Account for differences between school terms and breaks. If your hours changed, follow the application field instructions and use an estimate that fairly represents the period it asks about.

Avoid counting the same hours twice across overlapping entries. If a responsibility is difficult to summarize, make a short private note explaining how you reached the estimate. The goal is a reasonable description, not a precise-looking number you cannot support.

Share useful context within your boundaries

Explain circumstances when they help a reader understand your commitments or available time, using the space and instructions the application provides. Keep the explanation factual and focused on your own experience. You do not need to disclose private details about a family member to describe your responsibilities.

Review the entry for information a stranger would need. Can they understand what you did, how regularly you did it, and what responsibility it involved? Let those details carry the description instead of adding praise or comparing your circumstances with other students.
